Episode 33: Oh, Canada

On the Needles
Have the desire to knit stockinette and try English style knitting – picking up the Larch Cardigan again because I need a warm sweater in the middle of July. Having a really hard time trying to do English purling.

Spin Right Round
I have the need for the speed…of a power drill and to play with my makeshift Lazy Kate, which caused my wrist to act up because I wouldn’t stop. Sigh. Lesson learned (again).

Knitting Finds
It is somewhat themed for two reasons: first, I got to chatting with Lisa Mutch of Northbound Knitting on twitter, who is an absolute sweetheart. One thing lead to another and the centerpiece of this episode’s knitting finds is a review of her wonderful yarn and fiber.
The day I received the package, Ariane of Falling Stitches just happened to release the Tobias knitting pattern, and one of the skeins of MCN Worsted from Northbound Knitting in Papyrus (second from left) is just perfect for it.
The other reason is that this is somewhat in honor of my mom for Mothers Day (albeit belatedly), who was born in Montreal and a die hard Canadian to the bone.
Another fun Canada-related pattern: O Canada Mittens. Olympic rings optional.
Correction about the last episode: it’s not ZigZag Studios, but ZigZag Stitches and she is based in Canada too! I may have favorited all of the Japanese fabric project bags.

Knitting Travels
Knitting in the ER, Argyle Yarn Shop,  and sadly couldn’t make it to the Long Island Fleece and fiber festival.

Knitting all the Day CD by Melanie Gall, one-half of the Savvy Girls Podcast. Go and get it, especially if you love the clip on the show.

Tour de Fleece and Ravelympics with Team Sasquatch, WWKIP June 16 at the Grand Army Plaza library with the Brooklyn Fiber Arts Guild, and Stitch and Pitch July 20. Details here.

Episode 32: Cinco de Sheepo

Off the Needles
Finished my project for the Downton Abbey Swap…but still not telling the pattern. It’s a shawlette, with leaves and short rows. Brownie points to whoever figures it out! Knit out of Road to China in Blue Tourmaline.

On the Needles
Slogging along with the Summer Flies, but going to pick up the Botanical Garden Shawl as a very belated Mother’s Day gift.

Spin Right Round
I bought a new spindle – a Purpleheart Midi from Bosworth. LOVE. Thanks to a mini-spinning lesson from Sheila Bosworth, and a purchase of Romney fiber in the colorway Ritual from Into the Whirled I am getting better at drop spindling and getting major spinning mojo, hence the lack of knitting.

Holla Knits – see this post for more detail.

Maryland Sheep and Wool Roundup
Yoda the GPS failed on so many accounts, it took him and 3 iPhones going down to Maryland and him plus 4 iPhones coming home. See here for the pictures, and my non-yarn haul (fiber does NOT count as yarn!).

Ravelympics! Ravelympics! Check out the main group with all the info here, and join me and all the other podcasters and listeners in the be-all podcaster team, Team Sasquatch.
Long Island Fleece and Fiber is next weekend, May 19 and 20. I will be there (Dad in tow!) to see the “provata” (sheep) on May 20.
WWKIP Day is June 16 and at the Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn courtesy of the Brooklyn Fiber Arts Guild, and they are hosting the Stitch and Pitch between the Brooklyn Cyclones and Staten Island Yankees July 20.

Downton Abbey Swap update – going to double check who got their packages and update the spreadsheet this weekend.
QAL winners have been chosen by the all knowing RNG! Details here.

Holla Knits Blog Tour!

Hey all! Welcome to my little corner of the Internet and the final stop on the Holla Knits Blog Tour!

If you haven't heard of Holla Knits, seriously, where have you been???

The concept is great -  it "is a fun new site dedicated to bringing you knits you’re sure to love: bold, challenging, flirty designs you want to knit and wear immediately. Holla Knits is bridging the gap between what you knit and what you wear every day."

It is the brainchild of Allyson Dykhuizen who also runs The Sweatshop of Love (and featured in the "In the Conductor's Booth" series for the show); she saw that there were lots of patterns out there that looked great but weren't really what young, hip knitters would make and Holla Knits was born.

For the 2012 subscription (which now went up to $36 per year), you get 18 patterns - 6 each for the Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter collections and also an Accessories collection. If the Spring/Summer collection is any indication then it is definitely worth it to subscribe. Check out the patterns:

In Awhile, Crocodile

Put a Belt On It
This is just only a few of the great patterns available (and only the start of the discussion of Holla Knits - will definitely talk more in the next episode of the show!).  As a teacher, I always find it hard to have fun knits in my wardrobe that are also work friendly. I can definitely see myself knitting these three in particular and wearing them to school because the patterns are interesting and can definitely fall under the "semi-professional" category.

Finally, Holla Knits is sponsoring a pattern giveaway! In the comments below, tell me which one would you knit and why?
